Ranking on search engines is a great way to drive traffic to your website, resulting in more leads and sales. So, you’re probably here because you’re wondering how to check the rankings of a website? Good question, you! It’s fundamental to know where you’re starting at to be able to measure success. In this article, we go over 6 handy tools to check the rankings of a website, some free and some paid.
Why you should check the rankings of your website
Monitoring your rankings is important to know whether your SEO efforts are working. SEO is a long game, but it’s good to check in to see that you’re still on the right path. That is, on the way to ranking for queries that your target customers type into search engines.
After all, the main reason you want to rank is so that more customers can find you. But, it’s important to rank for the right keywords, too! Ranking for the sake of ranking is not useful to your business. You need to rank for keywords that are relevant to your business and have search volume.
6 tools to check the rankings of a website
To find out all your keyword rankings, you will need a ranking tracking tool. Here are a few of the most popular tools to check the rankings of a website.
1. Neil Patel
Neil Patel offers one of the best tools to get a quick overview of your SEO rankings, their search volumes, positions and even the estimated number of visits. You also get other interesting information, such as your organic monthly traffic and your top pages. Simply enter your domain and dig into that data! It’s a great starting point if you don’t want to invest any money, but the free version doesn’t allow you to track data over time.
SEMrush is our favourite way to check rankings, as its paid version offers a complete solution for tracking SEO projects over time. By simply typing in your domain name, you can see all the keywords you currently rank for.
SEMrush offers a free SEO toolkit that allows you to process 10 requests per day when registering for a free subscription. The position tracking tool lets you check your rankings as well as analyse that ever-so-important mobile and desktop data. The free account has its limitations, but they also offer a 7-day free trial that allows you to see what a paid account would get you.
SEO professionals love the paid version of SEMrush, as it offers complete information all in one place. This includes what keywords you rank for, your ranking position for each, as well as the keyword’s monthly search volume.
Moz has a bunch of free tools to analyse your SEO performance. Their free domain analysis tool can tell you a wealth of information, such as your domain authority, the number of keywords you rank for and your top-ranking keywords. While the free tool doesn’t reveal all your ranking keywords, it’s a good starting point if you’re not willing to cough up the cash for the paid version yet.
You can register for a free account to make 10 queries per month on Moz’s Keyword Explorer tool.
4. Ahrefs Rank Tracker
The Ahrefs Rank Tracker is a professional-level rankings tracking tool, much like SEMrush and Moz. However, it doesn’t offer a free trial like the other two. You can get access to it for $7 for the first 7 days, though.
AccuRanker is another paid tool, specifically designed to track rankings. Their free tools include a SERP checker, where you can see who is ranking for your desired keyword in your location right now. But, the free tools won’t help you find out your existing rankings.
6. Google Search Console
Google Search Console is Google’s own SEO tool for webmasters. It allows you to see what queries your web pages are showing up for and how many clicks they’re getting. It also tells you average ranking positions, i.e. the mean ranking of your page for one or more queries. It’s more a tool for identifying your highest-traffic queries than checking rankings, but it offers interesting data nonetheless. And, it’s free!
Why not outsource it?
Search engine optimisation is crucial to helping your business survive and thrive. If you’re interested in more free SEO tools, check out this article. However, even for a business with a small marketing budget, focusing your efforts towards SEO can really pay off.
To track your rankings easily in an all-in-one dashboard, you’ll probably need a paid tool. There’s a reason nobody’s giving all that information away for free! Alternatively, employ a digital marketing agency, who will monitor them for you as part of their SEO services, using professional tools.
